Opening of the Asian Individual Amateur Chess Championship

Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa bin Shakhbut Al Nahyan, President of the Asian Chess Federation, inaugurated the Asian Individual Amateur Chess Championship, organized by the UAE Chess Federation in cooperation with the Asian Chess Federation, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council. The championship was held at the Bristol Hotel in Dubai. The competition will continue until September 4 in Dubai, with the participation of 170 players from 27 Asian countries, competing in four classification categories, under the 2000 and 1700 classifications for both males and females.

The opening ceremony was attended by Taryam Matar Taryam, President of the Chess Federation and Chairman of the Supreme Organizing Committee of the tournament; Rashid Mohammed, representative of the Dubai Sports Council; Dr. Abdullah Al Barakat, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Fujairah Chess Club; and a number of sports figures and representatives of the clubs participating in the tournament.

Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa bin Shakhbut Al Nahyan, President of the Asian Chess Federation, thanked His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, for his patronage of the event. He said: “The participants in the tournament confirm that life is like a game of chess because it helps one develop better strategies, teaches one the importance of concentration when planning, improves skills, communication, patience and focus, but most importantly, it brings people together from all over the world. The slogan of the Asian Chess Federation is ‘We Are One’, and this is our main goal. The tournament is a great opportunity to showcase the players’ skills.”
